Be Ready, DC!—Plan ahead. Be prepared. - is an emergency personal preparedness outreach and awareness campaign comprised of two types exercises focusing on two main subject areas: 1) a series of community-based exercises providing every District citizen with the information and tools they will need to develop their own personal emergency preparedness plan; and, 2) a series of exercises geared toward assisting businesses, universities, the faith-based community, DC Public Schools, and disability and other special needs advocacy groups meet the emergency preparedness needs of their constituents. There will be a total of 15 of these exercises. This campaign is funded by and coordinated through the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency (DCEMA). DCEMA provides coordination and support of the city’s response to emergencies and disasters of all types, both natural and manmade.
The mission of the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency is to reduce the loss of life and property and protect citizens and institutions from all hazards by operating and maintaining a comprehensive all-hazard community-based, state-of-the-art emergency management infrastructure.
With input from D.C. residents, DCEMA developed workshop training materials to educate, document and assess the D.C. communities’ preparedness to respond to all types of emergencies. There are Community Emergency Preparedness Plans for all thirty-nine neighborhood clusters throughout the District of Columbia. DCEMA through preparedness training helps District citizens and businesses reduce their risk from disasters. The agency also provides preparedness training for city employees and other interested citizens.
