About This Role
A leading automotive manufacturer is seeking a Structural/Civil Field Engineer to facilitate industrial building system design, startups, and commissioning at its San Antonio, TX facility. This field role provides subject-matter expertise across submittal and drawing review, contractor and vendor coordination, construction administration, and continuous work-progress inspection — overseeing foundation, steel, and general contractors to meet schedule milestones, quality standards, and applicable codes. A structural candidate is preferred; well-rounded candidates with appropriate related experience may be considered.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate industrial building system design, startups, and commissioning activities
- Provide SME assistance in review of product/equipment submittals, shop drawings, engineering design drawings and specifications, and contractor RFIs
- Apply extensive knowledge of safety procedures, safe work practices, and OSHA requirements for building installations (prefabricated, stick-built, truss, mezzanines, press foundations, metal wall panels, steel/concrete columns, slab on grade, industrial and office finishes)
- Apply extensive knowledge of building codes and industry standards (IBC, NFPA, ASME, AMCA, ARI, AWS, FM)
- Coordinate steel detailing/inspection, delivery, installation, shake-out, erection & handover with contractors and vendors
- Coordinate weekend and plant-shutdown work with contractors, facilities groups, and manufacturing shops
- Conduct continuous work-progress inspections
- Support construction administration: schedule coordination, quality confirmations, coordination meetings, and planned utility outages
- Conduct inspections of building systems for compliance with specifications, quality standards, and codes
- Oversee foundation, steel, and general contractors for adherence to delivery methods and schedule milestones
- Prepare field engineering status reports for Project Managers; provide input to improve project technical specifications and standards
Qualifications
- 5–10 years of engineering experience
- Bachelor’s in Engineering — major in Structural/Civil Engineering
- 2+ years in construction management
- 5+ years in structural design/installation field
- Experience in design criteria development for industrial building systems
- Automotive (engine, transmission, or vehicle facilities) or similar industrial manufacturer experience
- Good organizational, communication, and schedule-management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, and Teams
- Preferred: Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Autodesk Build
